Should I Buy a CECT Phone? I’ll Tell You My Opinion
The other day someone emailed me and said she had read some of my reviews on the some of the CECT iPhone clones and she was intrigued by all of the features but she still wasn’t sure if she would be happy with these phones. She described what she wanted in a phone and then specifically asked “do you think I should buy a CECT phone?” This was a pretty loaded question that would be difficult to answer without knowing her phone habits, budget, mobile needs, personality, etc. I offered the information that I could. I described what I feel are the pros and the cons of these phones so that she could weigh all of the information herself. I’ll share some of the highlights of this conversation in the following article.
CECT Phones Offer Some Serious Money Savings: Of course, I think that the biggest draw to these phones is the savings that you’ll enjoy over the life of the phone. The initial cost is very low – often less than $100. But the real savings comes when you are able to fore go that expensive contract every month. These phones work with all GSM sim cards – and this includes pre paid or pay as you go. And, since you are going month to month, you can add or delete features as you need to. You can tweak what you are paying for as you see how much you actually use it.
For example, there are now pre paid web sim cards that last for a month. These cards are pretty inexpensive, but if you decided one month that you no longer needed unlimited web, then you just wouldn’t buy the card again. You can basically decide what you want to use from one month to the next. So you aren’t stuck paying a high price for things you might decide aren’t really necessary. And, should you decide you want a new phone, you don’t have to wait for your contract to be up. You just insert your sim into your next phone.
Lots Of Features: These CECT phones have most all of the iPhone features. They can browse the Internet. They have MP3 / MP4 players. Some have talking text that reads you messages to you. Most of them can download and play Java games and applications. They have web cams and digital camera. Most all of them can read PDFs and ebooks. Some support Windows and have WiFi. And the most popular ones (like the i9) have the shake and tilt feature. Almost all have radio.
Unique Features: In addition to all of the standard features, there are some that you don’t get on the original. Most of these clones have dual sim slots. Some come in very cool colors, (think pink, blue, yellow, green, etc.) And, there are some new “mini” models that are very cute (such as the KA08.) All of these allow you to remove the battery yourself. And most have extra speakers.
No App Store And No Logo: On the down side, you’ll mostly be using Java for your applications. You won’t be going to Apple’s App store and you won’t be flashing the fruity logo. This is important to some people. But for those who really just want the features and the touch interface on the cheap, these phones can make a lot of sense. I can’t tell you whether you should buy one of these phones or not, but I can tell you that they do give you most of the features without the commitment or high price.
